Myakka bound!

Today, our family is heading to the Sarasota area and the Myakka River State Park. It is one of the best areas in the state to observe the Florida Butterfly Orchid in flower, and they are in the peak of their flowering right now.

Here is a link to the park's website if you're interested in visiting it:

Oh, and please note: it is illegal to collect the orchids from this park (or any public property for that matter). If you would like your own butterfly orchid, check out my website and go through the links section for a list of commercial nurseries that may have this orchid in stock:

Enjoy!

Thanks for the photos! I've never seen one in bloom in person, but have some small plants that i bought online and mounted on driftwood. Hopefully they'll bloom next year!

What are the conditions that make it so good, or is it that the river provides good access. (Don't forget to walk the canopy trail!)

Robert,
it's just that there is a pretty large population of the plants there and they are readily visible right from the main drive.

Oddly enough, we didn't do Myakka, but instead, went to a nearby county park (on the recommendation of a friend) with some nice butterfly orchids in photography range.

Myakka River SP has the biggest population of butterfly orchids I've ever seen! Get off the "beaten path" and it's astounding how many flowers you can see this time of year!
